The Cessna Citation VII is part of the Citation 650 series, which includes a total of four aircraft types (Citation III, IV, VI and VII). One of the most significant differentiating features of the Citation VII was improved engines which allowed for higher altitude capabilities than the Citation III.

The first flight of the Citation VII took place in February 1991. Production ended in 2000 with a total of 119 deliveries. The Citation VII model is a continuation of the Citation III model and the latest in the 650 series of Citation jets.

There are 117 Citation VII aircraft in operation today. Most of these are owned outright (111), with 12% currently leased. North America has the largest percentage of Citation VII aircraft (70%), followed by Europe (10%) and South America (10%).
